The AVE is great and fast, but can be expensive unless you book online and well in advance - but it only takes 2 hours and 45 minutes. Otherwise there is a bus company called ALSA that has regular bus service between Madrid and Barcelona - Single ticket around 30 to 45 euros depending on day and time.
