Can someone travel to home country while the H1 transfer from company A to B is in process ?

My Friend recently switched employer and is on H1-B. The H1 transfer is currently in pending mode with USCIS as they need additional documents. He needs to travel to his home country due to emergency. Is there a way this person can travel to India and still retain the H1 status.
